The Board of Directors of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City has announced the commencement of the implementation of Al-Orouba Park, one of the major parks in Riyadh, as part of the “Green Riyadh” program. The construction works for the project, which spans an area of 754,000 square meters, have begun. The park is strategically located at the intersection of Prince Turki Bin Abdulaziz I Road and Al-Orouba Road, providing easy access for residents from various parts of the city. The park will contribute to improving the quality of life, offering recreational spaces for residents and visitors, and transforming Riyadh into one of the most sustainable cities globally.

The park’s unique design, which adheres to global standards, was selected from several designs submitted by six international competitors in a competition aimed at presenting the best ideas and designs that achieve sustainability and meet environmental standards. The design features a panoramic pathway, 3 kilometers long and 12 meters high, offering views of the city’s landmarks. The design also integrates modern technologies, blending nature with technology to provide visitors with an interactive experience using augmented reality. Over 600,000 trees and shrubs will be planted, covering 65% of the park’s area. The park will also include permanent water features, which are integrated into the design, alongside the Al-Lisan Wadi that runs through the park. The park will have 14 kilometers of walking paths and will include green terraces, open spaces, and amphitheaters for events and festivals, as well as sports facilities serving various age groups.

It is worth noting that the “Green Riyadh” program works on greening residential neighborhoods, implementing neighborhood parks, greening internal streets, and constructing tree-lined sidewalks and pedestrian paths, as well as greening mosques, schools, parking lots, valleys and their tributaries, main roads and squares, and public buildings such as ministries, authorities, universities, and cultural centers. Additionally, an irrigation network of 1,350 kilometers is being implemented across the city. The Green Riyadh nurseries are producing 3 million trees, shrubs, and ground covers annually to meet the city’s greening needs.

It is also noteworthy that the “Green Riyadh” program significantly contributes to achieving one of the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative and the Saudi Vision 2030, which is to plant 10 billion trees within the Kingdom. The program aims to plant 7.5 million trees in Riyadh, increase the green cover to 9% of the city’s area, and raise the per capita green space from 1.7 square meters to 28 square meters, which is 16 times the current amount. The program will also help reduce temperatures and improve air quality by reducing pollution and dust. Additionally, the program enhances Riyadh’s global ranking, aiming to make it one of the “Best Cities to Live In Worldwide.
